The mission of the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Institute’s Community Health program is to improve the lives of people living with dementia and their families in all of Wisconsin’s diverse communities through development, dissemination and evaluation of innovative programs, and through public outreach and education, in collaboration with statewide partners. WAI achieves this mission by:
- Providing education statewide to community partners
- Developing and testing new community-based support services for people with dementia and their families
- Helping to train Dementia Care Specialists
- Collaborating with statewide partners to increase the number of dementia-friendly communities in Wisconsin and spread best-practices across those communities
"Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias are already straining Wisconsin’s long-term care system, and the number of people affected is expected to increase dramatically as the baby boom generation ages. The DHS is committed to working to change the way state residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias are cared for in Wisconsin. The mission is to provide appropriate, safe, and cost-effective care throughout the course of the disease."
